The Case For Retail Security

Often it is difficult to make a case for paying out your hard earned cash on further services for your business but when it comes to protecting your assets and staff then any outlay you spend on Retail Security is cash spent well as it’ll pay for itself.

Recent research put out by the British Retail Consortium has traders describe a marked increase in hostility and pilfering as a direct result of the recession. The most recent crime review by the trade body the British Retail Consortium shows retail theft carried out by the general public increased by a third. It makes for abominable reading that a pilfering event happens nearly every sixty seconds 24 hours a day!

This report also states that at the last count approximately twenty two thousand workers nationally say they’ve been a victim of aggression by clients with a spokesman from the British Retail Consortium bemoaning the indisputable fact that the police and others in the criminal justice system do not take retail theft or retail security seriously enough.

So what precisely does half million a retail thefts a year equate to in financial terms? Well the answer is over £1 billion in lost revenue for the retailers of the United Kingdom. It has been said by industry leaders this figure could be quite modest with the actual amount being twice as much as the reckoning is that not all of the events are reported.

Retail theft is not a victimless crime, as many people who indulge in such actions will try and convince you, because it is the ordinary shopper who suffers the additional monetary costs whilst it is left to the unlucky worker to bear the emotional and psychological cost that comes from the distress of an attack in their workplace.

The only way the retail sector is going to fight this situation is to realise that they must see not just the short term but the long term picture and take a pro-active stance and that includes strengthening their stores retail security inclusive of hiring retail security guards, mobile guards, CCTV, etc.
